belly fat

According to a research published in the Journal of The American College Of Cardiology, even small amounts of abdominal fat makes a person more prone to heart problems. As per the researchers this hold true even when the body weight may be in the normal range.

Even three or four inches of central obesity should not be overlooked, because, it is an external signal that there is build up of fat and calcium in the arteries. It is this fat and calcium deposits which are responsible for hardening the arteries and triggering heart attacks.

The bad news is that this fat starts accumulating around the belly around middle-age. During middle-age, even those lucky people who have been skinny all their lives, start developing these love handles if they are not careful about their diets and their exercise regime.

You must be wondering why we are more prone to have a pot belly when we approach middle-age. Well, it is during this time that our metabolic rate slows down, we tend to exercise less, but, unfortunately continue to eat the same quantity of food. And, it is due to this very reason that you will find a lot of people who are in their 40’s have the classic apple-shaped bodies, with excessive weight around their abdomen.

Do you think you are in the danger zone? You would need to check your waist to hip ratio (WHR) to determine that. There is a cause for worry if the WHR is higher than 0.8 for women and 0.9 for men.

Don’t fret. There is a way out. All you would need to do if you are developing a pot belly is to eat high fiber food, exercise regularly, and reduce your intake of high calorie foods like biscuits, cakes, cookies, etc. By doing so not only will you look sexy in your svelte figure you will also protect yourself from a host of diseases.
