It is this week; a state Senate committee will continue to discuss the issue of childhood obesity in Michigan. The Senate Health Policy Committee on Wednesday is scheduled to hear testimony on a bill. It is at least twice a week for the entire academic year, the bill would require public schools to offer physical education for all K-5 students.

It is for at least 30 minutes, each physical education period would have to last. The legislation’s objective is to increase physical activity for Michigan’s elementary school students. But, how often must the health and physical education classes be provided? The current law does not specify this.

Sen. Tom George, a Portage Republican and sponsor of the bill said, “We face an epidemic of childhood obesity... It’s very significant. And it is one of the factors driving up our health care costs.”
