Celebrities can no longer be used to advertise junk food during television programmes designed to appeal the under-10s. As part of proposals to tackle obesity in children, new rules banning the use of celebrities in such advertisements were announced yesterday.
The rules will come into effect this autumn. And this will lead to the banishment of Gary Lineker’s Walkers crisps commercials and Beyonce’s Pepsi endorsement from ad breaks during children’s shows. Along with this, film tie-ins will also be banned. Designed to encourage children to pester their parents for foods that are high in salt, sugar and fat, other measures will too outlaw such advertising.
