The US Federal Drug Administration’s equivocal verdict on Sanofi-Aventis’s potential blockbuster drug Acomplia is a blow. FDA’s reservations are announced on 17 February. And if the prove relatively minor, Sanofi faces extra short-term uncertainty about a key new product over which management has proved too optimistic.



It is at a delicate time, Sanofi is counting on Acomplia. In the second half of last year, Allegra and Amaryl — two of its bestsellers faced generic competition for the first time. Their sales fell sharply.
