Obesity to hit economies hard!
Experts are really very much concerned about the rise in obesity, which is taking a form of pandemic. These experts believe that if obesity goes on soaring up, it may very soon knock economic output as hard as malnutrition. According to the recent WHO report: 1. Obesity has increased three times in the past two decades 2. By the year 2010 one in five adults would be obese in Europe and Central Asia. 3. Experts believe that an individual’s obesity can not only make him sick, adversely affecting his performance, but is likely to indirectly come as a blow to the economy too. 4. Obesity is likely to reduce life expectancy, upto five years less by 2050 5. All nations, rich and poor, are equally affected The Bottom Line The fear expressed by the experts is more directed towards the developing economies, where the prevalence percolates down to the poor. WHO and other organizations involved are doing little to curb the obesity pandemic and the efforts made till now to encourage consumers resort to healthier food and lifestyle have shown little or no positive results. We must pay emphasis on the fact that Obesity is not a disease, it’s a habit, given fillip by our attitude towards healthy living and contributing towards the development process as a collective force and can only be curbed by making people believe that they can combat it by implementing healthy lifestyle – plain and simple. In addition, the fact that we’re free to make food choices is a farce, apparently, it’s governed by the stuff available to gobble up in the market.
