Researchers say in this context that quitting smoking no doubt may add 4 to 5 pounds in some people in the beginning. However, this is a temporary phase that does not last long. Bringing out the same idea Samuel Gidding, MD, Professor of Pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and outreach director at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del says:

If you quit, you may gain an extra 4 to 5 pounds. Or, if you start, you may lose a few pounds. But it’s only temporary.

So, now you are left with no excuse to smoke.
