More than 2000 children aging 4 to 12 in Victoria town of Colac curtailed weights and waistlines with the help of a world’s first Obesity project. After three-years trial, the kids have reduced 1kg of weight on an average, reducing the waistlines up to 3cms.
The program proved to be amazingly successful, as told by Professor Boyd Swinburn from Deakin University. It became possible due to the activeness, eating well programmed stripped weight with wide ranging measures involving parents, schools, sporting clubs, fast-food outlets and local media.
Results collected after 18 months found as:
• Consumption of saturated fat and sweet drinks decreased to 55kg per week and 70 percent respectively.
• Preference is given to drinking water.
• After school activities increased upto 68 percent along with raised positive attitudes regarding healthy eating and physical activities to 60 percent.
• Viewing television reduced to 21 percent.
• Eating healthy lunches in schools by 57 percent.
It is the first of several community-based obesity programs funded by Victorian Government of Australia which proved to be successful leading to reduction in weights and waists.There is a need of unified effort by the state governments to expand it nationwide along with other major issues also.
