Television identified as a major cause of obesity in American childrenPrevious studies have a common perception about the link between childhood overweight and TV viewing. Physical inactivity was claimed as the main cause while watching television.

But another study has a different view now. It appeared in the issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. It said that children, who watch TV more, are likely to eat more of the calorie consumed, low nutrient foods advertised on television. It indicates that the junk food ads play role in the childhood obesity in the U.S.

Each extra hour of watching television can be linked with bigger consumption of foods advertised. Limiting the viewing time of TV, not more than two hours, will be helpful in this problem. It will reduce the exposure to content associated with negative consequences.
