Teenage girls and young women obsessed with their looks and a sexy figure often practice Diabulimia. Diabulimia is a state when a diabetic patient cuts the insulin intake to lose weight. In dire cases, skipping insulin can lead to death, while in other cases one could fall into a coma or damage kidneys or eyes.

It is estimated that one third of the diabetic women in the U.S. have skipped or reduced their insulin intake. The number is an astounding 450,00 in the Type-1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a state in which body’s self immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, resulting in little or no insulin production in the body. Such people have no other option but to take shots of the hormone daily. Type 2, is associated with obesity and accounts for about 90 to 95 % of all diabetes.

As long as the person stays alive, he suffers from chest pain, heart palpitations, muscle cramps, bacterial infections and lower back pain. Long-term complications such as blindness, amputation and kidney failure affect some.

It has been established that women with Type 1 disorder are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder.

For a diabetic patient, Insulin offers the lone hope of supplying the body with sufficient glucose from the bloodstream to the body’s cells, without which, cells starve as the bloodstream becomes overburdened with glucose. When sugar is high, the kidneys work overtime to filter the excess glucose from the blood.

Diabetes is a state in which the blood sugar level rise enormously leaving the patient to a sugar-less diet for the rest of his life. A diabetic has to depend on insulin. Regular physical exercises help in body metabolism. A diabetic patient is at a greater risk of a heart attack.

A study has given new hope for obese kids taking to surgery. Researchers have found that adolescents are less likely to suffer complications from obesity surgery than adults.

The study presented at a meeting of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery in San Diego, was conducted on two groups of patients. One group of 55,192 patients comprised of above 18s and another group of those between 12 to 18. It was found that within 30 days of the surgery, about 5.5 % of the adolescents had complications, none of them fatal. By comparison, nearly 10 % of the adults experienced complications, with 0.2 % proving fatal.

Dr. Esteban Varela of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, the study’s lead author clarified that the study has wronged the earlier dangers regarding doing big operations in kids.

Varela said, their study offers hope for those very obese adolescents who have otherwise exhausted all other treatment options. Bariatric surgey is a safe and effective option to lose weight for these younger patients who tolerate the surgery better than adults.

As the number of obese people has soared in recent decades, bariatric surgery offers solace in darkness and an alternative to diet and behavioral treatment methods.

The surgery alters the digestive system to modify stomach or intestines to diminish the amount of food that can be eaten or digested.

About 177,600 Americans had bariatric surgery last year.

The number of adolescents taking to surgery is very less, however, recent times have seen a rising trend. With this, the number of young people availing bariatric operation is growing.

Beware, if you one of those who are always after their child to eat more and more, then it is high time that you better curb your habit. A study has shown that overfeeding is one the prime causes of obesity in kids and more often then not only the parents are to blamed for that.

What is equally worrying is parents’ perception who think that only a fat baby is healthy. Explaining the whole issue Dr Tabitha Randell, a consultant paediatrician from Nottingham said:

I think the perception of parents is a very real problem. If you see every other child in the playground with their belly hanging over their trousers you think that’s normal.

When it comes to obesity among children then Britain is the worst affected nation in Europe. In fact the country’s media regulator are mulling to ban the junk food ads, which often encourage young ones to munch something or other through out the day.

Numerous proposals are in the offing to check the growing obesity amongst children. They include spreading awareness amidst parents and children as well, and also to warn them of possible health risk factors, which an obese faces.

But I wonder whether these measures would render the desired results in the age where couch potatoes and savouring junk food have become a vital part of life. Nevertheless the growing obesity in children is serious concern and it asks for some result oriented steps.

A new study reveals that eating too much is not adding more and more weight to one’s figure. Obese women on a low-fat diet lose weight, but they lose more if they eat more low-calorie-density fruits, veggies, and soups.

The study comes from a yearlong research based on the principles of the Volumetrics diet proposed by Penn State University researcher Barbara J. Rolls. The study appears in the June issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The diet cuts way back on fats, which carry more calories than any other food. A diet rich of water, low-density foods such as fruits, vegetables and soups promote health and cut weight.

The research was conducted on 97 obese women whose average weight was about 200 pounds. Half the women went on a low-fat diet, while the other half were put on the same low-fat diet comprising of water-rich fruits, vegetables, soups. And each was assigned to a dietitian. They were also resorted to physical exercise and made to walk 10,000 steps a day.
They were also allocated different tasks. The women received behavior therapy stressing self-assessment, objective setting, social-support networks, dealing with emotional eating, overcoming obstacles, managing stress and the environment, problem solving, and handling setbacks.

All the women lost weight after the end of the task. Those on the low-fat diet lost an average of 14 pounds, while those on the low fat, low-density diet lost 17.5 pounds even though they ate 25% more food by weight.

After the study it is established that eating a diet low in calorie density allows people to eat satisfying portions of food. This might result in decreased feelings of hunger and deprivation while reducing calories.

One may not be sure if depression is linked to obesity, but obesity may prevent one form being able to commit suicide! Yes, the obesity epidemic seems to have reached a new level of crisis, especially for people bored with life and who take suicide as the last resort.

Don’t know if we can out rightly call it a ‘crisis’ or a ‘blessing,’ it is sure to lead an obese and depressed child to mental health deterioration, but prevent him from committing suicide.

But, overall, this new study, warns America’s plunge into a new level of obesity epidemic crisis.

The author of the report, Dr. Marjorie Reese, director of UCLA’s Obesity Pathology Clinic said,

We’ve known for some time that obesity can cause heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and other potentially life-threatening illnesses. But the fact that obesity impedes suicide is truly troubling. It appears that the more reason people have to die, the less capable they are of doing so. They are literally trapped in their grotesque, blubbery bodies.

With one-third of Americans, classified as obese, suicide is made a less viable option for these people. Up from 18 percent in 1996, according to the report, now, 29 percent are estimated to be too heavy, immobile, or both making it difficult for them to attempt for suicide.

A 70 page-full of report focuses on suicide methods, which are found to be insurmountable challenges for the corpulent people, which otherwise, the normal people can take for granted.

It seems to be wiser for an obese person to fight obesity-related depression at the roots by resorting to slimming options, than to revolt against their “over-weight” lives.

The warnings are real because the dangers are real. Yes! I am talking about most talk able issue related to fitness. It is none other than but one and only- obesity. Obese mums beware! The new Australian research stated that Women who are overweight or single when they are pregnant could be more likely to deliver chubby children.

A study published in the Medical Journal of Australia. The factors which influence the obesity among children are given below:
• Mother’s weight and marital status create more to be responsible for childhood obesity than parenting style.
• Family clashes, negative life events, and maternal depression were not likely to affect a child’s tendency to become overweight or obese.
• Parenting style has nothing to do with childhood obesity.

Dr Lisa Gibson, a psychologist with the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth said,

We found that parenting style was not associated with childhood obesity. Previous indications of a link between poor family functioning and childhood obesity were based on studies without population-based data and without observations across a range of theoretically important factors.

She further cleared that eating habits and exercise might play a role in childhood weight problems. Further Dr. Gibson said,

Children from single-parent families, particularly when there is a family history of obesity, may struggle to maintain a healthy weight in an obesogenic environment with restricted access to nutritious foods and adequate facilities for recreational exercise.

These days everyone wants to be slim as they have a desire to look good and by being slim, they cut the risk of several diseases caused due to bulky figure. But sometimes slimming drugs proves to be harmful if it is misused. Several reports are coming related to the drug abuse. One such case is related to the prescription of phentermine in Hong Kong.

The doctors in Hong Kong are loosely prescribing — a slimming drug to females, who are eager to lose weight, with a warning that — if misused it could raise the chances of stroke.

The drug Phentermine affects blood pressure and heart rate. If a patient has cardiovascular problem, the drug will worsen the condition. It can also worsen the arrhythmia of a patient, and if blood pressure of patient increases, he can suffer from a stroke. This practice came to knowledge in 2004 when few patients rushed to the government hospitals complaining a number of side-effects. Doctors prescribe to their patients — more phentermine as it is cheap and gives fast results.

Nowadays everyone is getting conscious to look good, so one has to keep himself in shape. If one has a good figure than — it boosts the person’s confidence level. Obesity in present has becomes a serious cause of concern.

Overweight in people is normally caused due to lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or it may be combination of both, with genetics and lifestyle both playing very crucial and important parts in determining a person’s weight.

The excess weight puts people at risk of a many health problems, such as diabetes, heart attack and stroke, joint problems and mental health problems, hypertension and many other obesity-related chronic diseases. The best way to defeat the obesity is just by consuming balanced healthy diet, some physical activity and exercise thereby prevent to becoming obese. If we could improve our health, we could be able to improve many other aspects of our lives.

Home remedies and few herbal weight loss diets can play an important part in taking care of weight and thus help in avoiding obesity.

The first homemade herbal remedy is — most of the people in Asia use lime and honey in water to reduce weight, it is one of the cheap weight loss remedy that anyone can use. Europe is fast becoming the continent of Fat people. More than half of adults in European Union nations are obese or overweight and the young are increasingly following on the same path.

Fatty and sweet-based diets are quite common in Europe, which is the leading cause of obesity. Other things apart, lack of exercise results in accumulation of fats and cholesterol levels, leading to fatness. These are the main factors leading to poor health, according to EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.

Everybody has to be blamed - including the authorities, including the industry, including the consumers. If we don’t act, today’s overweight children will be tomorrow’s heart attack victims. Even more worrying is that the rate of increase of that number is more than 400,000 children a year,

Kyprianou lamented. He further added EU has been warning Governments for years, but the situation is getting worse, as the warning is not paid heed to.

Among the 27 members of the EU, over 21 million children are overweight. To counteract the drift, the EU has asked food manufacturers to endorse healthier foods with lesser fats and says many popular manufacturers have already committed for the same.

The biggest problem according to a few health experts is that southern member states have abandoned the Mediterranean diet based on olive oil and fresh fish and go for fast food. Further, the use of fruit and vegetables is lesser than medical recommendations. Contrarily, the intake of fat and saturated fats is high throughout the continent, while the spending on cereals has fallen by a quarter since the 1960s.

Such habits have only contributed to a situation in which majority of the member states, more than 50 percent of the adult population, is overweight or obese.

The Commission has proposed to tighten advertising rules on unhealthy processed food. It urged the food industry to curtail sugar, fat and salt production and appealed to the sports organizations to do more to get youngsters to engage in physical exercise.
